Recycling in
Westport Schools

The Westport School District has a strong history of promoting sustainable practices in both product use and waste management. Currently, Westport uses 'green' non-toxic cleaning products throughout the schools and purchases products such as paper towels and toilet paper made from recycled materials.  With respect to recycling and waste management, the Westport school district has a number of practices in place for recycling materials such as paper, plastic and metal, but also has procedures in place for the proper disposal or recycling of hazardous waste such as fluorescent bulbs and electronic waste (e-waste).

A challenge to this recycling system has been compliance by the faculty and student body. To increase the effectiveness of recycling in the schools, Club Green has worked to educate the schools to promote good recycling practices. Club Green helped to implement a consistent 3 bin waste system in every classroom for proper disposal of paper, bottles/cans, and waste. With the help of GVI, Club Green also purchased additional recycling bins for the athletic fields. Club Green has also set up a system of bins in the main lobby for teachers and students to recycle batteries, print cartridges and other electronic waste such as cell phones and battery chargers. There is also currently a program in conjunction with Coca Cola to earn money for the school by recycling Dasani and Smart Water bottles.

Most recently, GVI and Club Green have partnered with the PTA Council Green Committees to help them create and distribute "Don't Trash the Recycling" stickers to be placed on all recycling bins to remind students that garbage contamination of recyclable materials has been the biggest hindrance to proper recycling in the schools.

Further down the road, Club Green plans to work towards getting more recyclable materials in the cafeteria and we would also like to implement a composting system to reduce food waste in our cafeteria.

                          Internships

Sherwood Island
Nature Center

The Friends of Sherwood Island  State Park are recruiting high-school students and 2010 graduates to serve this summer as interns and volunteers at the park’s Nature Center.  Sherwood Island Nature Cetner was built by Peter Wormser who is now leading the charge on Wakeman Town Farm Renovation. For more information
www.friendsofsherwoodisland.org

Internship includes a small stipend. Under the direction of the center's naturalist, interns are responsible for creating and leading a variety of activities, such as art-and-crafts projects and trail tours for daily visitors, as well as conducting research to be incorporated into displays, helping to set-up exhibits, maintaining the animals, and acting as an educational docent to the public. Interns should be friendly individuals who have a strong interest in nature and environmental issues and are willing to take initiative.

Further information and a down-loadable application form are available at the Friends website: www.friendsofsherwoodisland.org
