What is the Wakeman Town Farm?
A newly-formed independent non-profit Westport GVI Town Farm, Inc.
has leased the historic Wakeman Farm property (134 Cross Highway, Westport, CT) from the Town of Westport to create
a true "Town Farm." The Wakeman Town Farm & Sustainability Center will be an organic
demonstration homestead and farm open to the public.
The.goal is to become a model facility that will educate /inspire the
community with local healthy food production, responsible land
stewardship, sustainable practices and community/service orientation. Activities will include growing fruits and vegetables,
demonstrating /teaching best practices for food generation and preservation,
and providing a farm stand and CSA pickup location.
Mike
Aitkenhead, Staples HS Environmental Teacher and 2009 Westport
Teacher of the Year will take up residence at and
oversee the Wakeman Town Farm along with his wife, Carrie, and their two
year old son, Ethan.
The Wakeman Town
Farm & Sustainability Center will be updated and prepped over the summer months in preparation for its first Harvest Fest on October 2.
